What Is the Motorcycle Endorsement?

The Motorcycle endorsement (code M) authorizes CDL holders to operate motorcycles. While not directly related to commercial trucking, it is a common add-on for CDL holders who also ride motorcycles. In Texas, it is obtained through the same DPS process as other endorsements.

Who Needs This Endorsement?

Any CDL holder who also wants to legally operate a motorcycle. Common among drivers who ride personally and want a single license document covering all vehicle types.

How to Obtain It

  • 1Pass the Motorcycle knowledge test at DPS
  • 2Pass the Motorcycle skills test (on a motorcycle)
  • 3Or complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course for skills test waiver
  • 4No additional background check required
  • 5Renewal with CDL renewal

Knowledge Test Topics

Motorcycle controls and operation
Protective gear and safety equipment
Turning, braking, and swerving techniques
Hazard avoidance
Riding in groups
Carrying passengers and cargo
Alcohol and drug effects on motorcycle operation

Study Tips

  • Complete the MSF Basic RiderCourse to waive the skills test
  • Study the Texas Motorcycle Operator Manual thoroughly
  • Focus on hazard avoidance and emergency braking techniques
  • Review group riding protocols
  • Understand Texas helmet and eye protection laws

Career Impact

Not directly career-related for CDL trucking. Adds personal riding privileges to your CDL. Some specialty positions (motorcycle escort, law enforcement) require this endorsement.
