What is a TWIC card?
Federal secure-access credential for maritime workers.
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is issued by the TSA and U.S. Coast Guard. It is required for unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities, vessels and outer continental shelf facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act.
Why CDL holders pursue it
Port drayage, container terminal work and intermodal freight often require TWIC access. Holding both a CDL and a TWIC can expand the types of freight and facilities available to a driver.
What it is not
A TWIC is not a CDL endorsement, a hazmat endorsement or a guarantee of employment. It is a separate federal credential with its own application, background check and fee process.
