What Is the HazMat Endorsement?
The HazMat endorsement (code H) authorizes CDL holders to transport hazardous materials as defined by federal regulations — including flammable liquids, explosives, corrosives, radioactive materials, and compressed gases. It is one of the most valuable endorsements you can add to your CDL because it opens access to premium freight and significantly increases earning potential.
Who Needs This Endorsement?
Any driver transporting materials that require hazardous materials placarding under 49 CFR Part 172. This includes fuel tanker drivers, chemical haulers, oil field drivers, and many industrial freight positions.
How to Obtain It
- 1Pass the HazMat knowledge test at DPS (30 questions; 80% passing score)
- 2Complete TSA Security Threat Assessment (STA) — fingerprinting and background check
- 3Pay TSA enrollment fee (currently $86.50)
- 4No disqualifying criminal history or immigration status issues
- 5Renewal every 5 years (TSA background check required each renewal)

TSA Security Threat Assessment
After passing the knowledge test, you must complete the TSA Security Threat Assessment. This involves enrolling at an approved fingerprinting location, submitting to a background check, and waiting for TSA approval — typically 2–4 weeks. The endorsement is not issued until TSA clears you.
